Stevensow is a fan of The Darkroom!

Shooting film on a regular basis means you have to find some way to develop it.  Either you do it yourself (which honestly, I’m exploring the setup for that, including my own digital backend), or sending your film off mail order.  I’ve been using Richard Photo Lab, and they are great, but I need a second lab that’s a little more cost effective for sending off tests, or just fun personal work that I maybe doing.  I’ve been seeing ads for The Darkroom pop up on my facebook page every so often, and I decided that I would give them a try….and I’m so glad that I did.  These guys have been in business in California for 35 years, and I’m all for supporting labs that have been around that long with as much business as I possibly can!  The more that everyone shoots and develops film, the more that the big film companies (you know who you are), will realize “This film thing isn’t going away like we hoped it would, there’s still some business to be done with film”

A couple of months ago after I attended the FlashBus seminar in Dallas, I took to the streets, just me, my Holga and a roll of Fuji 800z:

Some random color…and Tuesday Black and White

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

I missed posting last week, this week’s not as big as some of my other Tuesday Black and Whites; so I added some random color images to fatten this post up!  And I dragged out one of my favorite cameras; My Olympus 35SP! I forget sometimes how fun it is to shoot with, as well as how sharp the lens on it is….

Still Loving the Ilford Xp-2…I need to buy and shoot some of it in 120 pretty soon…and buy some more in 35mm, I only bought three rolls to test it out! (lesson, always buy tons of film, even when you’re trying a new stock out, because either you’ll like it, or you’ll learn to like it the more that you shoot it…)

Dallas/Arlington Photodrive

Monday, April 25th, 2011

One thing about shooting so much film that I have yet to grasp….is getting organized on when I’m shooting what.  I shoot a roll and it might sit a couple of days, and then I send it off to RPL, and when I get the scans back…I have no idea when I shot what!  That’s one thing you take for granted with digital, you know when you shot what.  I know that these are two different days and two different films!

Dallas (NPH)

I love that old Hotel sign…I’m just sorry I didn’t get over to shoot the rest of the hotel before it was torn down…the sign is all that’s left and probably won’t be up for too much longer.

And then on another day, I found myself at the Arlington Farmer’s Market building, with a roll of Fuji NPZ…

Tonya in Deep Ellum

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

I recently met up and had a fantastic shoot with Tonya, she has a natural beauty about her and is an absolute pleasure to work with!  She’s just starting out on her book, so I suggested some casual light, lifestyle-ish images!  We met up at one of my favorite places to hang out and to shoot: Deep Ellum!  And we had a great overcast day which to shoot; a photographer’s dream!  Colors are just so delicately beautiful and soft, the absolute best light to shoot some casual images.  Just had to break out the Bronica on this one!

Love, love, love these two…especially that top one.  One of the best feelings as a photographer is when you frame up a shot, snap the shutter…and just know that you nailed a great shot.

The only thing that can make a softly lit over cast day like 100 times better, is when a wind blows up and adds that little extra “touch” to a shot.  That classic windblown hair shot…

I look forward to shooting with Tonya again really soon!

First half shoot with the Bronny…love it, the detail, the color, here’s a couple of frames that I really liked…

Film (Lubitel love)

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Well not so much love, more like Lubitel flirting, it’s been so long since I’ve shot with it, I missed the focus on the first three shots I took with it on this night.  These two I nailed the focus pretty much; hey it’s a two element (if that) lens, only one stop down from wide open.  I wished my PC sync on my Yashica was working, it’s lens is crisp, and I would have loved to have shot it.  Plus if you’ve ever shot a Lubi, they can be pretty tough to nail the focus on without regular practice.  But there’s something about the way that these shots came out, the softness of film; combined with the Russian Glass of the Lubi, and the color palette of Portra 160.  And it was just fun using the Lubi in the studio!

Can’t wait to try something like this again….possibly with some new Bronica gear?  Or with a repaired 124g….

Grant Meeks

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Formula:  Take two photographers, an empty studio due to a cancelled shoot, and a bunch of studio strobes and what do you get?   Well it’s pretty simple; me and Grant just messing around with some lighting setups.  He took some of me. And here’s mine of him, I also managed to sneak in some film shots as well with my Lubitel, sent those off to Dwyane’s today, soon as I get them back, I’ll post a couple of those for a compare/contrast.

Film Time! (Images from April…)

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Just got some images back from ScanCafe….shooting film these days takes some dedication; either you breakdown and get a scanner (and if you’re really serious, learn to hand process your own film, that way you don’t have to send it to a lab and wait almost 2 weeks to get it back…), or you subject yourself to the time it takes to get a couple of rolls developed and then paying the cost to have someone locally scan it (or send it off for scanning).

These are from the first time that me and Grant Meeks, met and we went for a small photowalk through the streets of downtown Dallas, he shot digital, so he had his post up on this within a week or so of us shooting it….me well it’s almost August and I’m just getting the images up, I got the disc from Scancafe back about a week ago.  I still want to shoot more film, I just need to make the investment so that I don’t have to have such a long turnaround time on the images.
